Zealand Government, I extend our profound sympathy at the passing
of a great father of his Church and an inspiring leader on the inter­
national scene where he will long be remembered for his untiring efforts
to promote peace and social justice throughout the world.
The initiatives wich he took during his fìfteen years as spiritual
leader of the Roman Catholic Church have shown him to be a Pontiff
of clear vision and détermination, building, upon the strong foundations
and traditions of the past, a Church responsive to the complex challenges
of our age and his commitment to the movement towards inter-recon-
ciliation was manifested in many ways. He was truly a world leader,
devoting the authority of his great office and his énergies and personal
qualifies to the causes of world peace and of the individual dignity of
ail men.

I have been deeply grieved to learn of the sad news of the demise of
His Holiness Pope Paul VI. Please accept my sincerest condolences
in this hour of grief and sorrow. During the 15 years of his reign, Pope
Paul VI had made a significant contribution to the cause of international
peace. His courage, saintliness and humanitarian qualifies had won
him universal admiration. His loss would be felt throughout the world.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Pakistan and on my
own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you, and through
you, to the College of Cardinals on the sad demise of His Holiness Pope
Paul VI. In his passing away the Christian Community has been deprived
of its spiritual leader, and the world of a distinguished statesman
of great human qualifies. The services rendered by Pope Paul VI
for the promotion of greater understanding and goodwill among the
peoples of the world would always be remembered.
