The Ali Africa Conference of Churches has learned with profound
shock and disbelief the sudden and untimely passing away of Pope
John Paul I this morning. We recali with sadness and regret that
having been enthroned only on September 3rd his unique service and
contribution to mankind has now been interrupted by death. His death
brings to an unfortunate end the much expected mission to which Pope
John Paul I has dedicated himself wholly with a new sense of unity,
humility and sympathy for the poor, and to which millions of Christians
throughout the world were looking forward with renewed confidence.
The member churches of AACC join the rest of the world in mourning
his death. At this moment of sadness and grief we pray particularly
for and with the Roman Catholic Church that it may remain cairn
and firm in carrying out the mission that God has called it to fulfil.
May his soul rest in eternai peace.
