tion among European nations as was so eloquently expressed in the
inspiring message which he adressed to the Council of Europe last
year on the occasion of the inauguration of its new building.

My colleagues in the Commission of the European Community and
I have been deeply moved by the news of the death of His Holiness
Pope Paul VI. We ask Your Eminence to accept our sincerest condolences.
We share the grief not only of the Catholic Church but of the whole
world. We pay particular homage to the visionary interest he took
in the community's affairs and to the personal support he constantly
gave to the European ideal. Düring his reign His Holiness devoted
himself unceasingly to the cause of pease and justice. His loss will be
feit by the whole of mankind.

It was with deep emotion that I reeeived the announcement of the
passing of His Holiness Pope Paul VI and I wish to convey my most
sincere condolences. In his long life His Holiness joined a humble
service of God with untiring efforts to further peace and understanding
amongst men. His work and personality will remain an inspiration
for those who had the privilège of being reeeived by him.
