sition in unity". He underlined the qualities required for that search —<br />

faithfulness to Christ and to his word, humility before the working<br />

of his Spirit within us, service to one another. All who were présent<br />

On behalf of the general Committee and member churches of the<br />

all Africa Conference of Churches, I wish to extend to you our pro­<br />

found condolences on the passing of Pope Paul VI. Pope Paul will<br />

be remembered in Africa not only because he was the first Pontiff<br />

to visit continent but most especially for capturing the spirit of the<br />

times and encouraging the indigenization of the catholic church in<br />

Africa. Pope Paul appointed most of the 237 african bishops now<br />

serving the Church on the continent. When he became Pope in 1963<br />

there was only one african cardinal. Before he died he appointed 11<br />

more and took other steps to internationalize the sacred college of<br />

cardinals by encouraging the expression of the universal faith in the
