On behalf of the general Committee and member churches of the
all Africa Conference of Churches, I wish to extend to you our pro­
found condolences on the passing of Pope Paul VI. Pope Paul will
be remembered in Africa not only because he was the first Pontiff
to visit continent but most especially for capturing the spirit of the
times and encouraging the indigenization of the catholic church in
Africa. Pope Paul appointed most of the 237 african bishops now
serving the Church on the continent. When he became Pope in 1963
there was only one african cardinal. Before he died he appointed 11
more and took other steps to internationalize the sacred college of
cardinals by encouraging the expression of the universal faith in the
