We were deeply grieved by the news of the sudden death of His
Holiness Pope John Paul I, which is a great loss for the whole world.
His well known dévotion to the whole of Christendom makes his loss
even more profoundly felt. Please accept the feelings of heartfelt con­
dolences of the people of Cyprus and myself.

May I convey our profound grief at the death of His Holiness Pope
John Paul I. I express deep condolences to the Catholic Church which
has so suddenly been deprived of an inspired leader so shortly after the
death of his predecessor. Participating in the grief for the death of Pope
John Paul I are people all over the world, who saw in the déclarations
and first acts of the new Pope his firm détermination to strive for the
prevalence of peace and justice in the world.
