I have been deeply grieved to learn of the sudden and untimely
demise of His Holiness Pope John Paul I. Düring his brief period as the
supreme pastor His Holiness displayed a humility and strength of character
that will be long remembered. In his passing away the Christian
Community has lost a great spiritual leader and the world a statesman
of exceptional qualifies. On behalf of the people of Pakistan I extend
to you and through you to the College of Cardinals my heartfelt condolences
in this hour of grief.
