It was only a few weeks ago that I had the honour of being reeeived
by the late Holy Father. The brief encounter strongly confirmed a
deep-embedded impression of this great man which reflects humility,
compassion and a great love for his fellow human beings.
On behalf of my Government kindly accept my condolences. May
God rest his soul.

sudden demise of His Holiness Pope Paul VI. We hasten to express

Le Peuple togolais et moi-même avons appris avec une profonde et
vive émotion le décès du Pape Paul VI, un Homme dont la vie et
l'œuvre ont été pour les hommes de bonne volonté une source de grande
inspiration morale. Le Souverain Pontife dont nous regrettons au­
jourd'hui la disparition a été l'une des grandes figures de l'histoire
chrétienne. Il a sans aucun doute marqué très profondement l'Eglise
universelle et sera profondément regretté, non seulement par tous les
catholiques mais par tous les hommes quelles que soient leurs convic­
tions religieuses.
Le monde entier se souviendra pendant longtemps du Papé Paul VI
pour ses efforts inlassables en vue de l'unité au sein de l'Eglise Catho­
