The Church of Scotland sorrows with the Roman Catholic Com­
munion at the sudden loss of one who seemed to have so many of the
qualifies which would make a great Pope in this day and age. The
Church of Scotland is particularly sorry since this was the first Pope
in history at who's inauguration the Church of Scotland was officially
represented and reeeived both by the Pope himslef and those around
him so warmly and we are remembering in our prayers the Roman
Catholic Communion in Scotland.

olic Church condolences on the translation to glory of Pope John Pauì
and assures you of our love and earnest prayers. May the Lord choose
another worthy leader.

The American Baptist Churches in the USA join with their Christian
sisters and brothers everywhere in mourning the death of Pope John
Paul I. In his brief 34-day reign, time was insufficient to discern
policies or trends which might have a lasting impact on the relationships
between Roman Catholics and other Christians, including American
Baptists. Nevertheless, the transparent humility and warmth of this
godly man offered a deeper testimony to our relationships as Christians.
In life, he taught us how to reach out to ali people without judgment
and with deep pastoral concern. In death, he teaches us that little
things such as warmth, unpretentiousness, and ready smiles, can move
the world as do long and glorious reigns. We thank God for his brief
présence on the world stage, and we pray for Catholic brothers and
sisters as they turn once again to seek new leadership.
