I have learnt with the regret, profound shock and deepest sorrow
of the most untimely death of His Holiness, Pope John Paul I. Indeed,
Pope John PauPs short-lived Pontificate had won him great admira­
tion because of his humility, warmth and candour. Ail Kenyans will
sadly miss a PontifC whose philosophy held great promise for the création
of a God-fearing peaceful world of better understanding, love, human
dignity and racial equality. On behalf of myself, the Government and
the people of Kenya I convey my heartfelt condolences to the Vatican,
the Catholic Community in Kenya and the entire Catholic Church. May
God, the Almighty, rest the soul of his faithful servant in eternai peace.

Your Eminence : we in Liberia have learned with grief this morning
the distressing news of the untimely homegoing in his sixty-fifth year
of His Holiness Pope John Paul the First, having suffered a heart attack
last night at the Vatican. We are shocked and profoundly saddened
by this great loss to the Catholic Church and the world. On this distress-
ful occasion, I hasten to extend to you and through you to the Cardinals
and the entire Vatican family deepest sympathy on behalf of the Govern­
ment and people of Liberia and in my own name. The Pontiff who
succeeded Pope Paul the Sixth only a month ago, was greatly admired
and loved not only by Catholics but also by peoples the world over
