C'est avec la plus profonde douleur que nous apprenons le décès de
Sa Sainteté le Pape Paul VI. En Sa personne l'humanité perd un grand
défenseur de ses droits et une grande figure qui l'incarnait dans ce
qu'elle a de plus authentique : la charité. Le Liban en particulier, gar­
dera un souvenir inoubliable du grand intérêt que l'Illustre Disparu
lui a constamment montré, notamment dans ses moments de détresse.

Your Eminence : It is with deepest regrets that we in Liberia learned
the sad, shocking and distressing news of the homegoing last evening
of His Holiness Pope Paul the Sixth in his 80th year having suffered
heart attack at his suínmer residence near Eome. On this mournful
occasion, the government and people of Liberia join me in extending to
you, and through you to the cardinals and the entire Vatican family
our most profound condolences. In the demise of this devoted servant òf
God, who travelled to ali parts of our one world including Africa for
the cause of humanity, the world has sustained an irreparable loss.
Peoples everywhere will reflect upon his life of piety and his untiring
labour in the cause of human rights, the libération of ali peoples from
oppression and suppression, the élimination of racism and racial préjudi­
ce, the maintenance of international peace and security and the streng-
thening of the bonds of man. A great religious leader, renowned for
advancing the principies of ecumenism, His Holiness Pope Paul was
deeply admired, lo ved and respected not only by members of the Catholic
