(Strictim eœ epistula) : In an extremely criticai time, the beloved<br />

Pope Paul guided the Church with courage and with a concern for<br />

Christian truth and for the needs of the faithful. The initiative he<br />

provided for meetings with the Christian communities opened new<br />

paths in the ecumenical dialogue. The influence of his spirit was<br />

universal, affecting us in America with the humility and understanding<br />

he exemplified.<br />

We pray that God, the Father of our Bisen Lord Jesus Christ,<br />

may grant eternai rest to His faithful servant Paul, and that his suc­<br />

cessor will be blessed with the révérence and esteem accorded to Pope<br />

Paul as a supreme spiritual leader,<br />

in Canterbury as part of the Lambeth Conference wish to join with<br />

Christian people ali over the world in expressing their sense of loss<br />

in the death of His Holiness Pope Paul VI. We give thanks for his<br />

untiring work for peace and unity in a most difficult time in the history<br />

of the Church and the world. We acknowledge with gratitude to almighty<br />

God his steadfast witness to truth and charity. The Anglican<br />

world have lost a greatly respected friend who gave firm yet gentle<br />

leadership to the whole Catholic Church.<br />
