(Strictim ex epistula) : My prayers are with you during thèse days
which combine for you mourning and additional responsibility. I share
your mourning at the death of His Holiness Paul VI.
His long hours of prayer and work on behalf of the benefit of your
Church and indeed of people of ail parts of the world is much in my
mind. He now rests from his labors. I pray that the Lord will fulfill
for you his promise when he said : Blessed are they that mourn for
they shall be conforted. Just as his Holiness was faithful in his
teaching about the promises of our Lord's grâce and résurrection, I
trust that you will find reassurance in this Gospel message.
Since you must now accept the responsibility of electing a successor
to the See of St. Peter I shall pray that the Holy Spirit of our Lord
will guide you with wisdom. The choice will be of importance not
only to the Roman Catholic Church but to all of Christendom.
