It was great shock and deep sorrow that we heard of the death of
our beloved brother in Christ, His Holiness Pope John Paul. The length
of his pontificate may have been very short but in this time hè gave
us ali an example of how a humble nature and simplicity becomes the
servants of God. His humanity and humility served as a lesson to us
ali. Whilst we sorrow for the world's loss, we must remember that the
soul of His Holiness is now at rest with Christ, our prayers and thoughts
are with his flock throughout the world.

We are saddened by the sudden death of Pope John Paul. His warm
Personality, ecumenical openness and steps towards greater collegiality
in the exercise of his office will leave their mark upon the Roman
Catholic Church and upon the ecumenical movement, despite his short
pontificate. In his death the cause of Christian unity has lost a friend,
only a few weeks after he had been chosen bishop of Rome and Primate
of the Roman Catholic Church. We mourn with our brothers and sisters
as they expérience the loss of two leaders in such a short time. Lutherans
around the world will be praying that the Lord of the whole Church
may guide and direct them in this time of sorrow and décision.
