Profundamente conmovido por el fallecimiento de Su Santidad el
Papa Juan Pablo I hago llegar a Vuestra Eminencia Reverendísima y
por su alto intermedio al Sacro Colegio Cardenalicio, mis más sentidas
expresiones de pesar ante la dolorosa pérdida que enluta a la Iglesia,
la cristiandad y todos los hombres que reconocen la primacía de los
valores espirituales.

On behalf of the Government and people of Australia, I offer our
deepest sympathy to Your Eminence on the untimely death of His Holi­
ness Pope John Paul I. We deeply regret that the reign of His Holiness,
which was already marked by his profound humanity and warmth of
Personality should have ended so prematurely. We shall remember
His Holiness' noble aspirations for the Church, for the poor and
oppressed, and for all mankind.

It was with deep sorrow and regret that the people of Australia
learned of the untimely death of His Holiness Pope John Paul I. The
potential that the late Pope possessed to continue the valuable work
of his predecessors in seeking peace and harmony in the world was
most obvious. It was a tragedy that this potential was not fulfilled.
The Government and people of Australia join with you in mourning
this loss which is all the more tragic because of its occurrence so soon
after the death of Pope Paul VI.
