C'est avec une profonde peine que je viens d'apprendre la triste nou­<br />

velle du décès de Sa Sainteté le Pape Jean Paul I.<br />

au nom du Gouvernement Turc et en mon nom personnel, mes condo­<br />

I bave learnt with profound shock and deep sorrow of the most un­<br />

timely death of Pope John Paul the First who passed away last night.<br />

It is with a heavy heart that I, once again, convey to you my most<br />

sincere and heartfelt condolences, those of the Government and of the<br />

entire people of Uganda at this tragic loss to the Catholic Church and<br />

his family in particular, and to the world in general. It is only ten day s<br />

ago when I received a personal letter from the late Pope John Paul<br />

the First. In his message to me and to the people of Uganda, he expressed<br />

his affection and benevolence for the people of Uganda as his prede-<br />

çessors had done. Furthermore, I was deeply touched by the kind<br />

words the late Pope expressed to the Uganda délégation which was in<br />

Pome to attend his Inauguration. In his short reign, Pope John Paul<br />

the First had identifìed himself with simplicity, humility and as a<br />

man of the people. We in Uganda join the world in mourning his death,<br />

bearing in mind that he has not lived long enough to fulfill his mission of<br />

continuing the policies of his two predecessors. Your Eminence, as a
