With sadness received your telegram of passing away His Holiness
Pope Paul VI. Accept my and all members of the Assyrian Church
of the East in the world condolence. He will remember His Holi­
ness always in our prayers to the Lord.

Holy Father, our brother in Christ, offer heartfelt condolences in Christian

(Strictim ex epistula) : The Bishops and all who are taking part
in the Lambeth Conference have heard with great sadness of the death
yesterday of His Holiness Pope Paul VI, and I send you this personal
message as an expression of our grief.
I feel a real sense of loss myself as I recali my meeting with the
Holy Father in Rome in April last year and the brotherly relationship
which we had been establishing in our exchange of letters. This was
surely leading to a closer understanding between our Churches. Pope
Paul was himself an apostle for unity, and we know well how dear to
his heart was the quest of Christian ecumenism.
Thus I mourn the loss of a friend as well as the loss of a great
Christian leader. May Almighty God grant him rest in His eternai
kingdom and may He grant solace to those who weep. May He grant
too the wisdom and guidance of His Holy Spirit to the Cardinais as
they meet to prepare for the élection of a successor to the Holy See.
