I have learned of the sudden unexpected passing of His Holiness
Pope John Paul I with a sense of the deepest tragedy and sorrow. His
humanity and simplicity made an eárly and profound impact on people
of all faiths who held the highest expectations of his Pontificate. On
.behalf of myself and the people of Barbados I extend to the Colleges
of Cardinals and Bishops and to the members of the late Pope's sorrow-
ing family profound sympathy on the irreparable loss.

I am greatly shocked by the sudden demise of Holy Father John
Paul I. The Filipino people and Mrs. Marcos join me in grieving deeply
this irreparable loss to Christendom and to all mankind. Düring his brief
stint as Head of the Holy See, His Holiness had taught all Christians
not only in words but in deeds the basic virtues of humility, simplicity,
and sincerity. Please accept our most sincere condolence on his passing
away and our prayers for the eternai repose of his soul.
