ligioso di pace, in cui possano convivere, in pacifica uguaglianza di di­
ritti, le comunità locali delle tre grandi religioni monoteiste ed incon­
trarsi e dialogare fraternamente Ebrei, Cristiani e Musulmani della
regione e del mondo intero.
Siamo persuasi che dando adeguate risposte a ciascuna e a tutte que­
ste giuste istanze l'edificio della pace potrà essere costruito su solide basi,
creando un clima di sempre maggiore fiducia e intesa reciproca e dando
avvio ad un processo che consentirà alla pace stessa, con la collabora­
zione in diversi campi, di consolidarsi e di fruttificare sempre mag­
giormente.
Ripetiamo, pertanto, qui il fervido voto, già espresso recentemente,
che, grazie al coraggio perseverante e alla saggia lungimiranza dei re­
sponsàbili di tutte le parti interessate, sia impresso un impulso decisivo
alla ricerca delle auspicate e, vogliamo sperare, sollecite soluzioni.
Rinnoviamo, infine, a Vostra Eccellenza e a tutto il popolo egi­
ziano l'augurio più sentito di pacifico progresso e della Benedizione
dell'Altissimo.

Venerable and dear Brothers in Christ,
It is a great pleasure for us to welcome you this morning. For one
hundred years ago today, in what was in fact his first Apostolíc Bull,
Ex Supremo Apostolatus Apice, our predecessor Leo XIII restored
the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Scotland — the Church that
he referred to as a "beloved daughter of the Holy See."
And today, in the unity of Jesus Christ, we celebrate together this
important anniversary. As we do so, we recali with loving thanksgiv-
ing not only the event of a Century ago, but also the ancient origins
of faith in your land. It was the providence of God that linked you to
the See of Rome f rom the time of Saint Mnian, who preached to you
the Gospel of salvation. And it is the power of God's grace that has
sustained your people throughout ali the vicissitudes of centuries, and
has brought forth abundant fruits of justice and holiness in Christian
living.
