Sarajevo, 19. August 1997:
• Why did the cease-fire in Bosnia break down in the beginning of 1995?
„This cease-fire was broken on the wish of the USA because the Clintonadministration
had her own plan for Bosnia - but there are too many answers on this
qüstion anyway. In any case the war in Bosnia actually was an aggression of Rest-
Yugoslavia and Croatia on Bosnia - when I think of the meeting between Tudjman
and Milosevic in Karadjordjevo to split up Bosnia in 1991 for example.
In 1991 Croatia was not ready for a war with Rest-Yugoslavia, but during the war in
Bosnia from 1992 till 1995 both sides (Croatia and Rest-Yugoslavia) intervened
directly militarily in Bosnia. Thats’s why a kind of permanent cease-fire existed
between Croatian and Serbian forces in Bosnia during the war to go together against
the Muslim forces. But despite that over 20 percent of the Bosnian government
troops were Croats and Serbs. So the ABiH was not a only Muslim army indeed.“
• Why did the ABiH-offensive around Sarajevo fail in June 1995?
„Before the offensive around Sarajevo in June the ABiH had massed such a large
amount of troops and weapons around Sarajevo that it was more than unexspected
for me the offensive did not suceed. I can imagine that there maybe was a political
order to stop the offensive. This is very possible but very hard to prove. But in any
case the Serbs had more weapons during the whole war than the ABiH and so most
of the time they could take the initiative.“
• Which damage did the NATO-bombardements do to the Serbs in August -
September 1995?
„The damage the NATO-air raids caused on Serbian military institutions was not very
big indeed. Infact the impact was pychological on the Serbs. So this moral push also
was very effective for the Bosnian army and it’s commanders. The governmentoffensive
in September/October took place to reach the 51:49 land-key already fixed
with Anthony Lake before.“
• How did the military improvement of the ABiH-units develop till 1995?
„In September/October 1995 the ABiH-units were far better trained than at the
beginning of the war in 1992. But the moral of the troops was far higher in 1992 and
1993. That’s why our troops were able to defeat the HV and HVO-units in the war of
1993-94. But the political games of the Bosnian leaders destroyed the troops’ moral.“
