Dann kommt es am Abend des 28. April bei der INA-Tankstelle auf der Nova
Gradiska-Seite von Sektor West zur endgültigen Eskalation. Die Lage gerät außer
Kontrolle, als ein Kroate namens Sugic glaubt, einen Serben namens Blagijevic,
identifiziert zu haben, den er gleich beschuldigt, seinen Bruder 1991 getötet zu
haben. Sugic zieht ein Messer und ersticht den Serben. Die kroatische Polizei
inhaftiert Sugic und bringt ihn und den Leichnam weg. Dann aber weigert sich die
Polizei, Blagijevics Leiche an dessen Familie für das Begräbnis zurück zu geben.
Blagijevics Bruder kidnapped zwei kroatische Fahrzeuge, die gegen 21.40 Uhr auf
der Autobahn entlang kommen, und versucht so, die kroatische Polizei zur Übergabe
des Leichnams zu bewegen. Diese ignorieren ihn vollständig, was die ohnehin
angespannte Lage weiter verschlechtert. “Later, at 2230 hrs, someone opened fire
on a white VW Golf as it passed through Sector West and one of the Occupants
received two bullets in the head. A minibus travelling immediately behind crashed in
the confusion and one passenger died instantly, having been crushed beneath the
vehicle, while a second died on the way to hospital. The five who were unhurt were
taken away for questioning, this time by the Serbs. (...) ...when at 1215 hrs the
Croatian police and Serb authorities sat down together to iron out their differences.
An agreement was reached that all personnel and vehicles involved in the incidents
would be handed back at 1600 hrs. By 1800 hrs this exchange was complete but the
highway, which should have reopened one hour later, remained closed. HINA News
reported that the road would be open on Monday 1 May 1995 and Tuesday 2 May
between 0600 hrs to 2000 hrs, and from Wednesday 3 May on a round-the-clock
basis, but the Serbs were far from happy. This was clearly reflected in the advice
Colonel Babic, of the Serb’s 18 th Corps in Okucani, was now giving to his people.
‘Those Serbs who want to go to the petrol station again can do that,’ he said, ‘but
they expose their throats to Croatian blades.’“ 241
Die von den vorhergegangenen Ereignissen in Gang gesetzte Eskalationsspirale
dreht sich also weiter und weiter - und den Kroaten, die schon zum Sprung
bereitstehen, ist dies nur recht. Am 1. Mai sollte der Angriff erfolgen. Um 2.30 Uhr
kontaktiert der Kommandant der HV-Operationszone Bjelovar das UN-Sektor-HQ in
Daruvar und kündigt an, dass eine ‘Special Police Action’ zur Wiederöffnung der
Autobahn in Kürze beginnen werde. “By 0430 hrs all UN troops in Sector West were
on full alert and at 0500 hrs Hrvoje Sarinic made contact with the UN’s Deputy Force
Commander in Zagreb and admitted that a major Croatian attack on Western
Slavonia (Sector West) was about to commence in order to reopen the Highway, but
he insisted that this would be a ‘limited police action’, whatever that was supposed to
