This brief <strong>des</strong>cription is in line to the pictures shown in recitation and I would be pleased to answer your<br />

questions. The numbers of the catalogue are principally out of Rosenbauer’s Catalogue 1908 and 1930,<br />

the pictures of the helmets were made by the author in Carinthias Museum of Fire Fighters.<br />

The “Edict for Putting out Fires”, dated by 18.5.1825 concerning the city of Klagenfurt, Carinthia, says,<br />

that the fire fighters wear white – light blue or white meshes on their hats.<br />

By formation Klagenfurt’s fire fighters in June, 14, 1864 there were bought beside new equipment also a<br />

helmet for the commandant for about 8 Gul<strong>den</strong>, made by Metz in Heidelberg. In the same year they<br />

bought also 16 helmets for the riser-brigade.<br />

One of the first photos shows Klagenfurt’s fire brigade with hats of the gymnasts.<br />

The photo of 1869 shows the fire brigade in uniform and with equipment by fire practice.<br />

Rapid development arosed and so a lot of fire helmets were made of leather, steel sheet, nickel-plated,<br />

with various crests and frets. There were no exactly regulations, the groups of fire fighters were organized<br />

as corporations and could buy their equipment according their individual convenience – if they had<br />

the money. Even within the corporation there existed various forms of helmets.<br />
