Directions: The following passage is an early draft of an essay. Some parts of <strong>the</strong> passage need to be rewritten.<br />

Read <strong>the</strong> passage and select <strong>the</strong> best answer <strong>for</strong> each question that follows. Some questions are about particular<br />

sentences or parts of sentences and ask you to improve sentence structure or word choice. O<strong>the</strong>r questions ask<br />

you to consider organization and development. In choosing answers, follow <strong>the</strong> conventions of standard written<br />

food cooked in microwave ovens had been changed.<br />

blood of research participants who had consumed<br />

food or drink cooked in a microwave. (7) The balance<br />

between good and bad cholesterol changes <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

worse, and <strong>the</strong> number of white blood cells decreases<br />

in <strong>the</strong> short term.<br />

(8) These claims are not only un<strong>for</strong>tunate, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

frighten consumers unduly. (9) Much evidence exists<br />

to indicate that <strong>the</strong>se claims are simply wrong. (10)<br />

When a microwave oven's power is switched off,<br />

microwaves cease to exist and do not remain in food<br />

after cooking. (11) Perhaps most significantly, experts<br />

in <strong>the</strong> medical community has concluded that <strong>the</strong><br />

results of <strong>the</strong> Swiss study and o<strong>the</strong>rs of its kind are not<br />

relevant to food cooked in microwave ovens and eaten<br />

by domestic consumers.<br />
