KAPLAN'S GUIDE TO THE SAT CHANGE AND PRACTICE QUESTIONS 19 FREQUE NTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHY IS THE SAT CHANGING? In a live webcast on March 5, 2014, the College Board - administrators of the SAT - shared more detailed information about their plans for the redesigned SAT. According to the College Board web site, "The redesigned SAT will ask students to apply a deep understanding of the few skills and content areas most important for college and career readiness," with the goal of supporting "college readiness and success fo r more students." The new SAT is being designed to reinforce what students learn in the classroom. This does not mean, however, that simply going to class will ensure a high score on the new SAT. Test-specific preparation will still be a factor in ensuring Test Day success. As the College Board releases specifics pertaining to the new SAT, Kaplan will continue to update students with the most up-to-date information. SHOULD I TA KE THE SAT OR ACT? While the SAT is an older test, the ACT has gained popularity over the past decade. In 2013, 1.8 million students took the ACT and 1.6 million students took the SAT. However, both tests have the same aim: to level the playing field for college admissions by providing everyone in the country with the same set of questions, regardless of their background. All U.S. colleges and universities accept both the SAT and ACT. The best way to determine which test you should study for is to take one of our free practice tests for each exam and determine a) which test you felt more comfortable with and b) on which test you scored in a higher percentile. Once you figure out which exam you want to take, start prepping! WHAT ABOUT THE PSAT? The PSAT (Preliminary SAT)/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) provides firsthand practice for the SAT. Ta ken in the Fall of your junior year (and sometimes sophomore year as well), the PSAT currently has five sections (versus the SAT's ten): two in Math, two in Critical Reading, and one in Writing. There is no essay on the current PSAT, which is significantly shorter than the SAT. A high score on the PSAT can qualify you for participation in the National Merit Scholarship Competition, which can lead to college and university scholarships. The first administration of the new PSAT, reflecting the changes to the new SAT, will be in October 2015. WHEN SHOULD I TA KE THE SAT OR ACT? HOW MANY TIMES? Most students take the SAT/ACT tests for the first time during their junior year so they have time to retake it if needed. You can take these tests more than once and, in fact, probably
