6 KAPLAN'S GUIDE TO THE SAT CHANGE AND PRACTICE QUESTIONS
WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE IN THE ... CLASS OF 2015
Start thinking about standardized tests! Depending on whether or not you're applying to
your first-choice school for early decision or early action, you have until mid-Fall to take
either the SAT or ACT. You will NOT be affected by the SAT change. To figure out whether
you should take the SAT or ACT, try taking a Practice Test of each, or one of our Tu rbo Tests.
Then consider which test was better for you overall, and on which exam you scored in a
higher percentile. Attend one of our free online practice tests, which we offer for both SAT
and ACT. Remember: the SAT and ACT are scored on different scales, so pay attention to
your percentile, not just the scaled score.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE IN THE ... CLASS OF 2016
The new PSAT that will be administered in the Fall of 2015 and the new SAT that will be
administered in the Spring of 2016 will NOT affect you! By the time these new tests are
administered, you will have already taken the PSAT and SAT or ACT and will be well into
the college application process.
What you can do now, however, is start studying for the PSAT, which you will take in the
Fall of 2014. A high score on the PSAT can lead to a National Merit Scholarship, which can
help you pay for college. Check out our free online PSAT events.
Also, start looking into any Advanced Placement or college-level cou rses your high school
offers. A well-rounded course of study and strong GPA are top college admissions factors.
Scoring well on AP tests can earn you college credit, allowing you to graduate early or place
out of introductory-level classes.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE IN THE ... CLASS OF 2017+
As you begin to think about preparing for college, be aware that the changes the College
Board has announced to the PSAT and SAT will affect you!
You will take the new PSAT during your junior year in the Fall of 2015. This will be the first
time the new PSAT is administered.
If you are a member of the Class of 2017, you may have an option to take the current version
of the 2400-point SAT if you take the test when it is offered in November 2015, December
2015, or January 2016. We do not recommend taking the SAT before the PSAT in October
2015. If you want to see if the 2400-point SAT is right for you, check out one of our free
online practice tests. After January 2016, this version of the SAT will no longer be offered.
The new SAT will first be given in March 2016. March is usually the first time juniors take the
test. Make sure if you are taking the test in or after March 2016 you prep using resources
designed for the new test. Materials for the old 2400-point test will no longer apply.
