Directions: The following passage is an early draft of an essay. Some parts of <strong>the</strong> passage need to be rewritten.<br />

Read <strong>the</strong> passage and select <strong>the</strong> best answer <strong>for</strong> each question that follows. Some questions are about particular<br />

sentences or parts of sentences and ask you to improve sentence structure or word choice. O<strong>the</strong>r questions ask<br />

you to consider organization and development. In choosing answers, follow <strong>the</strong> conventions of standard written<br />

English.<br />

Questions 30-35 are based on <strong>the</strong> following passage.<br />

(1) In 1834, archeologists who studied <strong>the</strong><br />

ancient Celtic civilization of 500 B.C.E.-500 c.E.<br />

had a great mystery on <strong>the</strong>ir hands. (2) They were<br />

excited to have discovered ten ruins of towns<br />

inhabited by <strong>the</strong> ancient Celts. (3) All of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

contained an area in <strong>the</strong> center surrounded by a<br />

trench. ( 4) Trenches were often used as defenses,<br />

like a moat around a castle. (5) In this case <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were not big enough to be an effective defense.<br />

(9) It was even suggested that <strong>the</strong>se spaces were<br />

landing sites <strong>for</strong> spaceships!<br />

(IO) Archeologists now believe that in fact Celts<br />

were preoccupied with <strong>the</strong> idea of sacred space.<br />

(11) Marked with a clear border, <strong>the</strong>y were only<br />

used <strong>for</strong> religious rituals. (12) This <strong>the</strong>ory explains<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r beliefs and practices associated with Celtic<br />

religion. (13) During holidays, priests would walk<br />

around <strong>the</strong> town three or nine times, making a<br />

symbolic border. (14) Ancient Celts also built<br />

temples on islands. (15) This makes sense because<br />

islands have a natural and obvious border.<br />

(16) They are land surrounded by water.<br />
