Peking University, Beijing, March 14, 2005: The third session of the 10th National
People's Congress (NPC) is closed this morning, meanwhile a group of economists
hold a seminar at the China Center for Economic Research (CCER) of PKU to share
their views on the NPC and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
(CPPCC).
The major topics of this seminar are "harmonious society", "macro regulation" and
"agriculture, rural areas and farmers‘ issue". Lin Yifu, Director of CCER and
committee member of the CPPCC, offered his view first, "This year there are few
disputes among Deputies to NPC&CPPCC. Regarding macroeconomic trends,
macro regulative policy, measures to solve the agriculture, rural areas and farmers
issue and guideline to build a harmonious society, Members of the National
Committee of the CPPCC generally agree with the government". He further
summarized, "Compared with last year, it is 'All Quiet at the Western Front' this
year".
Scholars attending the seminar feel that China is becoming more and more mature.
Professor Song Guoping and Chen Ping said that the handover of leadership is very
smooth, economy stable and government policy continual. All these contribute to a
healthy and stable national economy. Another sign of China's maturity is the
regulation to macro economy. Last year China's economy successfully realized
soft-landing. Prof. Chen described it as China's incredible flexibility and
reproducibility.
How to build a harmonious society is the most discussed topic in the seminar.
Scholars believe that to build a harmonious society is the government's good wish. In
order to make this wish come true, China needs to set up regulations to strengthen
its advantages and to lower its disadvantages as well.
