Peking University, Beijing, September 29, 2006: Recently, the Laboratory of
Intelligent Control of PKU College of Engineering announced that a research team
led by Wang Long, Changjiang(Yangtze) scholar, has invented a new kind of
humanoid robot called Runbo-I (running robot).
The ultimate goal in robotics is to make intelligent humanoid robots move relatively
flexibly like human. However the joints of traditional humanoid robots are made of
motors and it moves by driving the legs. Such kind of robots move stiffly, with a low
energy efficiency and high cost. Now scientists are trying to invent new humanoid
robots with a different moving mechanism by using a bionic approach.
Runbo is the short word for running robot. Equipped on each of its leg with only one
motor as its main drive, Runbo mainly simulates the mode in which human walks as
the whole movement realizes the storing and releasing of energy with bionic flexible
knee joint and anklebone. Runbo now can walk steadily and perform cart-pushing
action.
To test the moving ability of Runbo, The team has designed an experiment in which
the robot moves with a loaded cart attached to it.
