Ye Jiangchuan Invited to be Lecturer
of PKU Chess Class

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 22th, 2005: The elective course of chess at Peking
University was opened first time in the first semester of 2005 which takes one credit
and requires 32 hours of class each semester. Because chess is more interesting
than other major courses, and above all, Mr. Ye Jiangchuan has been invited to be
the lecturer, more than 100 students had selected this course. Mr. Ye Jiangchuan is
renowned in the circle of chess.
Today in No.1 science building at 12:40, the classroom of the chess course was filled
with students and Mr. Ye had already begun his lecture. The topic was ―Basic
strategies of Chess‖. Most students were not familiar with chess and they listened
with great intensity to the lecture.
At the break, Li Xiaopeng, chairman of PKU Chess Association introduced, ―From
the very beginning of this course, students grew more and more interested in chess.
After class, there will always be students with various questions surrounding Mr. Ye.
Sometimes, they will also play chess with the teacher. Mr. Ye is really very busy, and
we are much honored to have the great master of chess to play with us. Students are
all very earnest.‖ He also said that great support was given by Beijing Patriots‘ Chess
Club to help us successfully open this chess course at PKU. Last year, a
comprehensive chess contest was held in Beida and Tsinghua. Chess courses will
be held in other domestic universities and it is probable that students from different
universities can learn from each other, said the leader of Beijing Patriots‘ Chess
Club.
The act of chess being introduced into class has a history of 100 years in Europe, but
it is recent in our country and still rare in entering university courses. The opening of
chess course at Peking University is a great progress of chess‘s development in
universities, which has also contributed to the popularization of chess in China.
