PKU Leaders Attending Lectures

Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 12th 2003: Vice President Lin Jianhua, who is in
charge of the teaching activities at PKU, is sitting with students in the classroom of
―Evolution‖, an optional course for undergraduates of science given by Prof. Gu
Hongya from PKU School of Life Sciences. Professor Lin records the lecturer‘s
performance and class‘s reaction in a particularly designed chart as he listens. This
marks the start of ―Peking University Leaders Attending Lectures System‖.
As to the impression of the lecture, Professor Lin Jianhua appraises: ―The teacher
has made full preparation for the class. She combines the content with general
knowledge and daily life, as well as the recent development in the field of biology. It
is quite a good optional course.‖
University leaders attending school lectures is not a new form in education. A lot of
school leaders at PKU history proposed and practiced this activity, to fulfill the
function of enforcing teaching management and improving teaching quality.
However, no complete system has been set up. In order to promote the teaching at
PKU to the international first-class level, Peking University has considered setting up
―Peking University Leaders Attending Lectures System‖, in the hope that school
leaders go deep into the teaching activities orderly, to find out, examine and solve
the problems involved. According to Attending Lectures System, each university
leader should attend at least one lecture a semester.
On Nov. 21th, Vice President Lin Jianhua attends the lecture ―A History of World
Cinema‖. It is said that President Xu Zhihong, Vice President Chi Huisheng, Wu
Zhipan and other university leaders will step into the classrooms and listen to
lectures with students recently.
