Regional Cooperation in Asia<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, May. 25th, 2007: Center for Regional Integration <strong>of</strong><br />

Northeast Asia Research, School <strong>of</strong> International Studies promulgated a newly<br />

published monograph on May 24th----A Political-economic Analysis on Regional<br />

Cooperation in Asia: institutional building, safe cooperation, and Economic growth.<br />

The monograph makes a comprehensive summary <strong>of</strong> achievements and<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> Asian Regional Cooperation in past decade, and explores the field<br />

and feasible approach <strong>of</strong> future regional cooperation in Asia<br />

Three authors engaged in the compiling work: Wang Zhengyi, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> School <strong>of</strong><br />

International Studies, Miles Kahler, an American scholar, and Gaomu chengyilang, a<br />

Japanese scholar. They sorted out the studies on Asian Regional Cooperation done<br />

by scholars from China, America, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korean and Singapore<br />

in the past decade.<br />

Allegedly, this monograph treats all aspects <strong>of</strong> Asian Regional Cooperation, such as<br />

history, political safety, economic cooperation, institutional building and theory<br />

innovation. The book consists <strong>of</strong> six parts: introduction, history and angle <strong>of</strong><br />

comparison <strong>of</strong> Asian regional cooperation, Asian regional cooperation and<br />

institutional building, Asian regional cooperation and safe cooperation, Asian<br />

regional cooperation and economic development, as well as Asian regional<br />

cooperation and theory building.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wang Zhengyi says it‘s an important approach to base upon the history<br />

and reality <strong>of</strong> East Asia region, by which Chinese scholars can walk out from the<br />

dominative Europe-centered or America-centered international relation research.<br />

Progress in Asian regional cooperation and reality that reform and opening-up<br />

revealed provide us with practical basis to create theory. Zhang Shaogang, Deputy<br />

Director-General <strong>of</strong> International Dept. Ministry <strong>of</strong> Commerce, regarded that this<br />

book not only reflected the issue concerned in the East Asia regional cooperation,<br />

but also brought forward the theoretical framework, and provided visual angle and<br />
