A First-Class Teaching Building to be
Built at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, October 30, 2005: The building construction at PKU now
is under a critical phase. As a new public teaching building is to be built, some parts
of the new building of the School Government are to be used as classrooms and
some existing teaching buildings are also to be renovated, the internal design of the
classroom has become an issue of concern for students and teachers. A symposium
was held on October 26th in the office of the Teaching Affairs Dean to discuss this
issue.
At the beginning of the symposium, Liu Zhongyi from the Department. Of Computer
introduced a analytical report that compared the classroom design of the Peking
University and that of the Qinghua University in an all-round way, which concluded
that, despite its advantages in lighting, openness of the ceiling and matching of color,
the classroom of the PKU is eclipsed by that of the Qinghua University in both
environment design and advanced equipment.
Then Lu Xiaodong, vice dean of the Office of Teaching Affairs, made a report about
the classroom design of the Yale University. With many small-scale classes, Yale
adopts the conference room style in designing the classroom so that students and
teachers can engage in equal and face-to-face communication.
The two reports were well received in the symposium, and the designers admitted
the problem mentioned in Liu Zhongyi‘s report, which were also the key issues in
their designs.
It is foreseeable that a new teaching building will present an entirely new appearance
to us and provide us better service.
