protein functional design<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, April. 12th, 2007: The theory group headed by Lai Luhua,<br />

who was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the Chemistry and Molecular Engineering College <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>,<br />

had made so commendable progress in the field <strong>of</strong> functional protein design that the<br />

results <strong>of</strong> its research published in the March 27 publication <strong>of</strong> " Proceedings <strong>of</strong> the<br />

National Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences" (Liu S, Liu SY, Zhu XL, Liang HH, Cao AN, Chang<br />

and Lai LH* ZJ. Non-natural protein-prote in interaction-pair design by key residues<br />

grafting. PNAS,104:5330-5335,2007). Its publication attracted academic attention;<br />

and the BioCentury made a special interview about it. The paper's first author Liu<br />

Sen was one <strong>of</strong> the first batch <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary graduates formally enrolled by<br />

theoretical biology center in 2002.<br />

Protein plays a very important role in life activity, as almost all life activities requires<br />

its participation. The complexity <strong>of</strong> biological phenomena is due to the diversity in<br />

functions <strong>of</strong> different proteins. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lai‘s group developed a "key protein<br />

residues grafting" algorithm, which can change the function <strong>of</strong> a very protein. Such<br />

an approach would likely be applied more widely to realize the free protein functional<br />

design.<br />

According to the PNAS Official website, PNAS is one <strong>of</strong> the world's most widely used<br />

integrated journals. Since its founding in 1914, PNAS has continuously reported<br />

current advance, research reviews and many high-level academic activities on the<br />

biology, physics, social science and some other fields. PNAS is weekly every, and<br />

updated daily on line. Its 2005 SCI impact factor is 10.3.<br />
