Peking University, Beijing, Apr. 16th, 2006: The founding ceremony of School of Arts
was held yesterday at the Overseas Exchange Center, marking a new breakthrough
in the field of art studies of Peking University. Li Lanqing, former Vice-Premier of
State Council, congratulated on its establishment, ―Art and Culture are indispensable
spiritual needs of human being.‖
According to the reports, the newly-founded school is made up of four
departments—art studies, music, fine arts and film & television art, as well as six
research institutes on culture industry, calligraphy and television research etc.
President Xu Zhihong attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. He said that
Peking University had a long history of art education. As early as the beginning of the
20th century, former president Cai Yuanpei had already emphasized the importance
of aesthetic education, and advocated the university as the focus of art education of
the country. Another significant step of aesthetic education at PKU, was made with
the establishment of the School of Arts.
Professor Ye Lang, Dean of the PKU also emphasized the profound meaning of the
foundation in his speech----the founding of the new school was the inheritance of the
tradition initiated by Mr. Cai, and would also serve the goal of Peking University to
become the first-class university in the world.
