Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 6th (2006): There is a Stone Fish on Weiming Lake
of Peking University, swaying its tail and frolicking vividly, which was once set in
Yuanming Yuan, the royal gardens of Qing Dynasty.
Stone Fish is a memento from Changchun Yuan in Yuanming Yuan and was built in
1747. Once, there was a big fountain in Changchun Yuan, which was surrounded by
four sheep and ten eagles gushing water from their mouths into a pond. Stone Fish
was just the adornment in the pond. After World War Two, Yuanming Yuan was
destroyed, and Stone Fish had been sold. Years later, the lord of Langrun Yuan
bought it back. When the 1930‘s seniors graduated from Yenching University, they
bought Stone Fish for their campus and set it in Weiming Lake.
The position of Stone Fish in Weiming Lake is quite perfect, because a wonderful
scene can be seen in sunny days while there is enough water in Weiming Lake. The
inverted image of Boya Tower in Weiming Lake is just point to Stone Fish, and the
top of Boya Tower was exactly inverted reflected into the mouth of Stone Fish.
