classics of Confucianism; while the selected set must include the most significant
works. Therefore, cataloguing itself is a research work. It is a great achievement if
we can make good catalogues of both these two sets. In addition to this, the
correctness of punctuating for each works,, the appropriateness of relative selecting
process and the conciseness of collating records should all be treated in an
academic research manner.
Since the compilation of Confucianism sutra is a long-term project that will last for 10
to 15 years, or even 20 years, we should carry out all-round research on
Confucianism during the compilation. We must bear in mind that the encyclopedia is
not a decoration of our culture, but a tool to understand Confucianism. We should
carry forward the spirit ―Make efforts constantly; be virtuous always. ‖ in
Confucianism, so that we can make the Chinese culture known by the whole world.
Besides, while compiling the sutra, we can compose a series of high-standard
books such as ―The History Of Confucianism‖, ―Research On Confucian Classics‖,
―Research On Confucian Theory‖. Each collection can include 50 books in order to
make a full cover of all the aspects of Confucianism. We can also think of linking
Confucianism with some significant problems that our society faces nowadays. For
instance, ―Confucianism And ‗Peace & Development‘‖, ―Confucianism And Global
Ethics‖ ―Confucianism And Ecosystem‖, ―Confucianism And National Cohesion‖ and
so on. We do hope that our work can do some contribution to our society.
We suggest some universities recruit a number of master and doctor students. They
can join in the compilation during their study in the university. We believe that they
will be the backbone in researching Confucianism after several years.
The Advantages of Peking University in the compilation Confucianism sutra, which
has about 800 million Chinese characters, cannot completed by one university alone.
However, Peking University has some advantages in organizing this project.
Peking University has a long tradition of the Chinese culture. Many departments in
our university such as Department of Chinese, Department of History and
Department of Philosophy are all the best of China. Our university has a group of
experts on Confucianism. We have already published many books on Confucianism.
Now we have invited many famous scholars to join in the compilation, for example
we have invited Professor Pang Pu to be our editor in chief and we have also invited
many scholars from America, Japan and other countries. Our library can provide
70% data during the whole compilation. Early this year, we have founded the leading
group of the compilation, which includes our president Xu Zhihong, Wu Zhipan and
other famous scholars such as Ji Xianlin and Zhang Dainian. We also have
established the compiling group which is made up of several professors from
Department Chinese, Philosophy and History and Library. Now the preparation for
the compilation has received support from all the departments of Peking University.
