Foreseeing the Future by Reviewing
the Past
Peking University, Beijing, Sep 26th, 2004: ―Reviewing the past as a means of
ruling.‖—This ancient saying has almost become the common understanding of those
working in the management field in China.
Together with china‘s per capita GDP exceeding 1000 dollars, Chinese citizens‘
consuming structure has begun to transit into ten thousand or even one hundred
thousand, and the educational consumption has begun to pursue the goal of
sustainable life-long education. However, most of China‘s educational fields still stay
in a simple level as specific skill training; and courses from a strategically
advantageous position, which can improve one‘s continuing learning ability, such as
―understanding management through history‖, are quite few.
Today, Guanghua school of Management and History Department of PKU
cooperated with each other and offered the MBA course ―understanding
management through history‖ in time, to discuss the art of ―foreseeing the future by
reviewing the past‖ together. Although there are thousands of management training
courses in China, the newly-designed course at PKU breaks a path for the
―history—management‖ systematic research, both in China and around the world.
Wang Youtian, famous historian nowadays and professor of History Department,
said that this newly-designed course at PKU is not a rigid history study, but designed
to transfer the essence of management contained in history into source of creation in
practice. When teaching, the professors would select and analyze some prominent
cases, describe those details and relating elements which have influenced historic
events as exactly as possible, so as to view the problems from a systematically
historic perspective.
He emphasized that everyone could see examples of management in history, but it
wouldn‘t be that easy to really ―learn‖ something about management through history.
