Zhou Heng, graduated from the Historiography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> in<br />

1952, and was the first scholar in China to get an Assistant Doctor Degree in<br />

Archaeology under the guidance <strong>of</strong> Guo Baojun, Su Bingqi and Zhang Zhenglang. One<br />

year after graduation, he joined the Department <strong>of</strong> History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and<br />

became the lecture, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor and pr<strong>of</strong>essor successively before he finally<br />

wined the title <strong>of</strong> Tutor for Doctor awarded by the State Department <strong>of</strong> China.<br />

In his 50-years-long scholar life, Zhou Heng contributed a great deal to the development<br />

and prosperity <strong>of</strong> Archaeology in China, especially the study <strong>of</strong> the Shang and Chou<br />

period in China‘s history. He was not only the first person to divide the culture<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the Xia Dynasty, but also took charge <strong>of</strong> many archaeological dig in the<br />

field. The Chou Temple dig in Shanxi Province in the late 2004 was regarded as one <strong>of</strong><br />

the most influential archaeological discovery since the foundation <strong>of</strong> the People‘s<br />

Republic <strong>of</strong> China.<br />
