Peking University, Beijing, Dec. 24th, 2005: the Conference of Founding the Center
for Protein Science of Peking University was held in the building of life sciences on
the morning of December 25th. Han Qide, deputy secretary of the Standing
Committee of the National People's Congress, Chen Jia‘er, former PKU President,
and Xu Zhihong, President of Peking University attended the opening ceremony and
unveiled the tablet of the newly-established center. Among the attendants of the
conference were academicians, professors and representatives from Ministry of
Science and Technology and Ministry of Education.
The center, which integrates the efforts in conducting protein research by the
departments concerned for close cross-department cooperation and academic
exchange, is committed to comprehensive in-depth research of the protein. Members
of the center, from various departments, will conduct basic as well as applied
research of the protein from different angles.
The protein is the direct executioner of life, involved in almost all the processed of
life. In a so-called post-genome age, one of the important subjects of research in life
sciences will be the protein with a variety of structures and functions, the key to
understanding the fundamental nature of life
