You may always hold the thoughts as much as other people the vegetarians are
self-restricted or mentally twisted ones. But you may be wrong.
Vegetarian Culture Association of Peking University is the first vegetarian society
among Chinese universities. Initiated by several peace-lovers on campus, it has
attracted more than 500 members since its establishment in May, 2000. They
believe that vegetarianism is of great benefit to human health as well as to the
preservation of animals and nature thus more people should become aware of the
benefit and gradually transfer to vegetarians. The Association carries the purpose of
―Promoting vegetarian culture, advocating green life.‖ It is a misunderstanding that
only vegetarians can be admitted to the society. Everybody is welcomed to learn
more about vegetarianism and try to identify with the idea.
Buddhists began to appear in the reign of Emperor Liangwu in China (about AD 500).
Long before that, specialized vegetarian cuisine came into existence and
vegetarianism has received substantial support ever after. With quite a few recipes
coming down, it is widely accepted that Chinese vegetarian food tastes better than
meat. Vegetarian Culture Association is active in theoretic promotion on campus: it
has invited several environmentalists, legislators and nutritionists to give lectures.
They also spread vegetarianism by video and pictorial board and conducted forum to
exchange vegetarian experience.
Moreover, well-supported by the vegetarian circle in Beijing City, the Association has
led its members to taste vegetarian food around. Vegetarian trips to Bolin Temple,
Guanghua Temple and specialized restaurants have been arranged. Long Hua Tree
Vegetarians‘ Home at the foot of Fragrant Hill, a unique restaurant, is their weekly
haunt. The owner of it is the only man working, and payment is according to diners
themselves rather than to the bills. Though small and simple-decorated, it has
received hundreds of vegetarians and non-vegetarians, domestic and overseas
together with their high appreciation. The vegetarian window in Yi Yuan canteen on
