Eileen Chang‘s Story Brought to Stage
as Peking Opera

Peking University. Oct 27, 2009: Eileen Chang‘s novella masterpiece "The Story of
the Golden Lock" will be brought to stage by Taiwan‘s Guo Guang Chinese Opera
Company on Nov. 18 at PKU‘s Centennial Hall.
A lecture was held at PKU on the eve of the debut to share with the students and
faculty how they reproduced the literary masterpiece in the form of Peking Opera.
Core members from the cast and crew present at this lecture included: art director of
the opera company, Prof. Wang Anqi (Taiwan University), Tsinghua University
doctoral candidate and playwright of the opera, Zhao Xuejun, director of the Opera
Company, Li Xiaoping, and world-famous opera actress Wei Hai.
As one of the most important masterpieces by Eileen Chang, ―The Story of the
Golden Lock‖ has been adapted for the stage and the screen. However, thanks to
the Guo Guang Chinese Opera Company, it is the first for the story to come out in
the form of Peking Opera, a brand new way to interpret and represent Eileen‘s
works.
Since its foundation on July 1, 1995, Taiwan‘s Guo Guang Chinese Opera Company
has played an important role in inheriting traditional opera and promoting art
education in Taiwan.
