In the Spotlight: Health Conditions of
the Peasants

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 2nd, 2005: The Resource and Information
Conference of Population, Environment and Health Development was held at Peking
University on Feb. 28th. This session was sponsored by the Work Office of the
National Population and Family Planning Committee, China Population Academy,
Institute of Population Research of Peking University, Center of Healthy
Development of Chinese Population and Research Institute of Gerontology. This is
the third meeting after the first session of the High-Ranking Resource and
Information Conference of Population Research of China on January, 2003.
The theme of this year is ―Focus on the Health of the Rural Population and Promote
the Development of the Rural Area‖. Zhang Weiqing, director of the National
Population and Family Planning Committee, Wang Guoqiang, vice-director of the
National Population and Family Planning Committee and vice-chairman of the
standing committee of China Population Academy and Wu Zhipan, vice-secretary of
the standing committee of PKU Party Committee and vice-president attended the
meeting.
In the last half century, the economic, social, population and health patterns of China
have undergone great changes. At the same time, the difference between urban and
rural areas has become increasingly more obvious in the development of many
aspects. In this conference, leaders, academicians, experts and delegates from all
related circles discussed from various aspects the environment, health conditions,
current problems of China‘s rural population, the relationship among the
development of rural population, environment and health and the strategic choice of
improving the health level of the rural population. They provided advices and
references for the government when establishing the policies for rural development.
