Peking University, Beijing, May 12, 2004: With the opening of Shao Huaze's
exhibition of his overseas photograph works on May 12th, School of Journalism and
Communication (SJC) of PKU raised up the curtain on its 3rd anniversary
celebration.
"My favorite picture is the one taken in Hawaii, USA, which I named the Old Man, the
Child and the Sea," Shao Huaze, dean of SJC, commented at the opening of his
exhibition, "because it symbolized exactly the development of journalism at PKU."
He went on to explain that the old man represents the long history of PKU's
journalism, and the lovely child is just like present-day SJC, while the sea indicates
SJC must overcome great difficulty to promote China's journalism industry.
Established on May 28th, 2001, SJC is the youngest school at PKU. Yet, SJC is also
one of the most rigorous and energetic schools with a faculty of 25, including 8
professors and 11 associated-professors. Currently there are 555 students in SJC
majoring in journalism, radio and TV news, publishing, and advertising. All of the
academic programs offered by SJC have been fully developed in the past three
years.
According to Dean Shao Huaze at the opening of his exhibition, although SJC still
faces some difficulty, such as lacking funds and facilities, all the faculty and students
in SJC are confident that PKU is able to build the first-rate school of journalism in the
near future. Before appointed dean of SJC in 2001, Shao had held several prominent
positions such as president of China Journalists Association and chief editor of
People's Daily.
Vice-president of PKU Wu Zhipan, the secretary of party committee of SJC Zhao
Weimin and SJC's executive vice-dean Gong Wenyang attended the photograph
