Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 20th, 2005: Anne Wedell—Wedellsborg, professor from
AARHUS University of Denmark, gave a lecture about the transformation of China‘s
image in Western world in the afternoon of 18th October, in the academic lecture room
of Chinese Department.
With the issue of universalism vs. ―the other‖ going through the whole presentation,
Professor Wedellsborg first summarized the attitudes towards China in Europe from
17th century to 19th century--―from loving to hating‖--as she said, and further divided the
300 years into three periods, namely, the period of Jesuits, proto-sinologists and
polemicists. In each period, she introduced the main characteristics and plenty of
significant figures, who had influenced the culture exchange between China and the
West, including Marco Polo, Matteo Ricci, Leibnitz and Montesquieu, full of rich
historical material and vivid examples.
Finally, she discussed about reasons for the dramatic transformation of attitudes
towards China in 19th century from various perspectives, pointing out the social and
scientific progress had lead the radical change in people‘s minds.
Hosted by Professor Liu Dong, the lecture attracted comparative literature majors and
students interested in cross-culture from different departments and universities.
