PKU News, Beijing, March 16th, 2004: the Dell English Cup Debate Final between
representatives from Thailand and Hong Kong, as an important event constituting
the first Asian Law Students‘ Association Conference, is held today in the Simulated
Courtroom of Law School of Peking University, with the Hong Kong team being the
final winner.
Over a classic case of domestic violence in which a woman killed her husband
during the latter‘s sound asleep out of the fear of continuously being abused, the
debate turns out to be a rather hot one around the topic that whether the woman‘s
action constitutes self-defense. Hong Kong team states that law should protected the
underprivileged group while the Thailand team insists that the woman killed her
husband when the latter is sleeping, and ―a sleeping man can harm no one‖; in
addition to this, ―three stabs were not self-defense‖, ―she is intended to kill the guy‖.
After a debate with both sides asking and answering questions and final statements
of their own positions, the debate ends with Hong Kong team winning with an
advantage by 68 points. Mr. Steve, a teacher now teaching in Dell English, once
working as a probation officer in the state of Connecticut, U.S., who was invited as
one of today‘s judges, comments on today‘s debates as practical in that it ―addresses
problem that is universal‖.
The Dell English Cup Debate was held as one essential component of the First Asian
Law Students‘ Association Conference (ALSAC for short) held in the Law School of
Peking University as commemorating to the centennial celebration of the latter. Law
