the campus. Considering this together with the high cost of man-made grassland
carpeting and daily maintaining, the GLS made a survey over the grassland at
Peking University campus and submitted it to the horticultural department. In the
meantime, focusing on the magnificent biology world within campus, they‘ve done
many surveys ranging from campus fallen leaves survey to data base of angiosperm.
With their biology knowledge, the GLS leads its members to become aware of the
great variety of birds and plantations in campus, and outside it. Just as what Wang
himself describes, ―we can notice those touching moments of life in campus which
are usually overlooked by other people if they don‘t have specialized knowledge
about biology.‖
Of course nothing can be more inspiring when recording the long-range traveling and
relative investigations during summer and winter vocations. This is universally true to
almost every society in campus. The GLS is also the same.
―Usually we choose locations with rich botanical and biological resources and most
of which locates to the south of Yangtze River,‖ Wang Fang explained, ―for example,
last year we went to Tianmu Mountain and Chongming Island, which are both among
the largest natural reservations nationwide. We also have been to Shennongjia
natural reservation and Yunnan.‖
When recalling their investigation in Shennongjia natural reservation in Hubei
province, Wang cannot help but express his deep concern over the local
government‘s policy of developing the local natural reservations, which is according
to him, should be among the least to be recommended. ―At least the central part of
the reservation, which is vital towards the monkey living there, should never open to
the outside world under governmental policy.‖ He said. ―In addition to this, the hot pot
of giant salamander appears to be quite a popular dish served there with a pretty low
price.‖ Wang frown on such phenomenon.
As to their trip to Yunnan which began in this winter vocation, Wang expresses deep
regrets, but this time the regret is only towards their short lingering in Yunnan and so
much left to be discovered and appreciated.
―We chose the route which winds to the southeast part of Yunnan, which is quite an
unusual one in tourists‘ eye but was highly valued among the international biology
researching circle for its rich resource of vertical botanical and biological
distributions.‖
Apart from the 500 birds pictures taken there, Wang comments on Yunnan trip as
unforgettable mainly because of the pleasant memories about people there who are
always self-effacing but quite willing to help and over those dishes with local flavor.
