PKU Basic Disciplines: Department of
Mechanics and Engineering Science
Integrated into College of Engineering

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 22nd, 2006: The resolution about the integration of
the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science into College of Engineering
was announced by Professor Wu Zhipan, Deputy Secretary of CPC PKU Committee,
in Teachers‘ Conference of College of Engineering on 21st, March.
Another two resolutions were also announced, concerning the establishment of the
CPC Committee of College of Engineering in place of that of the Department of
Mechanics and Engineering Science and the appointments of Zhang Dongxiao and
Su Xianyue.
President Xu Zhihong attended the conference and delivered a speech. He said that
it was indeed cheerful to integrate the Department of Mechanics and Engineering
Science into College of Engineering. Since the establishment more than fifty years
ago, the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science had trained a number of
distinguished academicians and made great contribution to the development of the
discipline as well as PKU. Now facing the better opportunity to build the first-class
university in the world, they decided to set up the College of Engineering, which
would be on the basis of the outstanding basic science of Peking University and
would have its own characteristics. At last, he wished the new-built school a
prosperous future.
Former director of the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, Su
Xianyue and President of College of Engineering, Chen Shiyi also made speeches,
emphasizing the significance of the integration and expressing their best wishes for
the development of the college.
