Patriotism in ―Dec.9th‖ Singing Contest

Peking University, Beijing, Dec.7th, 2005: Sponsored by the Youth League Committee
and the Labor Union of Peking University, the ―Dec.9th‖ Singing Contest was held in the
Centennial Commemorative Hall on Dec.4th to commemorate the 70th anniversary of
―Dec.9th‖ Movement.
21 teams from 21 departments and schools joint this contest, using their voice to
express the patriotism of modern PKU members. Beyond this, the audience enjoyed the
excellent performances given by the PKU Alumni Chorus, Professors‘ Chorus, and the
Teachers‘ Chorus (HSC included). The Tian An Men National Flag Squad, PKU Dance
Company and PKU Glee Club also contributed in this performance. School leaders,
including Wu Zhipan, the Standing Vice-Secretary of the school Party Committee,
Zhang Yan, the Vice-Secretary of the school Party Committee, Lin Jianhua, the
Standing Vice-President and Yue Sulan, the Vice-President of Peking University,
watched this contest with other teachers and students.
The prizes of this contest include the special prize, the first/second/third prize, and the
prizes for the best organization, best originality, best performance and the best DV. To
encourage the development of the school original music and activate the students‘
creation ability, grade for original music was also added to the final score of each team.
This contest invited many famous experts in the field of chorus as the judges, including
Li Peizhi, the standing vice chief director of the China Chorus Association and the
former leader of the China National Symphony Orchestra Chorus; Fang Songfu, the
standing director of the China Chorus Association and the former standing conductor of
the China Opera and Ballet Theater Troupe; Sun Zhifen, the general secretary of the
China Chorus Association; Li Guangxi, a famous lyric tenor and opera artist in China,
and Lei Keyong, a famous bass singer. Yan Chi, the director of the United Front
Department of the school Party Committee, Sun Li, the standing vice-president of the
Labor Union, and Hou Xijin, the associate professor in the Dept. of Arts Studies, who is
also the director and the standing conductor of the Students‘ Glee Club also played the
role of the judges on behalf of the teachers.
The traditional ―Dec.9th‖ Singing Contest involves all the departments and schools at
Peking University, attracts many students and teachers to participate and becomes the
most influential activity on the campus. It enkindles the students‘ patriotism and through
