From last Monday, the war of recruiting new members among the student
associations broke out. Though it is a tradition of PKU for many years, there are
always something new for each year.
There are more than one hundred student associations at Peking University.
―Student associations are the basic cells of campus culture.‖ said the secretary of
PKU branch of Chinese Youth League which is the managing body of the student
association. Many lectures given at PKU are held by various student societies. Every
year PKU CYL elects Top Ten Students‘ Society.
The usual scene of recruiting new members was characterized with tables put on
both sides of the road in triangle and flags and banners hung up on the trees behind.
Posters in different styles were arranged like a wall around the iron fence of triangle
place. Music was broadcasted out from the stereo cassette players or computers.
Every day between 11:30 and 13:00 during the recruiting period, the road crossed
with Wusi Road and leading to triangle place was very crowded. Behind the desks
are the old members of each student societies. They are responsible for registering
for the new members. In front of the desks are the students who were interested in
the student societies. They asked all kinds of questions. What activities will be held
by the society in the new term? How much is the membership fee every term? What
are the requirements of the society to his new comers? What can I get from the
society if I join it? And so on. On the road stand many boys and girls with a lot of fly
sheets in their hands. When a student passed by, they would give him or her a fly
sheet. The sheet always is the introduction to the societies and their activities. Some
students even shouted out ―Welcome to join in our society!‖ again and again, just like
a salesman in the flea market.
But some new established societies add some new color to the recruiting activity.
The members from HIPHOP society gave a live perform. With the background music,
they organized a team to hip and hop. It drew a lot of attention. The members from
PAFE gave a martial arts show, including TAE-KWON-DO and Chinese Kong Fu.
Another student society Modern Music Association brought out their music
instruments and played some famous songs, including foreign ones. Students'
Society of Calligraphy and Painting took out their magazines. In the magazine, there
are many calligraphy works done by the old members and some articles written by
professors from Art Department of PKU. Such activities attracted the passers-by.
Even a man of middle age walked up to the desk of SSCP and asked whether he
could join in the society. Of course, he received a warm welcome.
Usually the recruiting war will last two weeks.
