PKU CCME: Academic Ethic is the
Required Course for Postgraduates

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 18th: President of PKU, Academician Xu Zhihong
delivered a speech named ―Social Responsibilities of a Scientist and the issues of
ethic and morality in scientific research‖ to near 400 postgraduates of CCME
(College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering) on the evening of March 8th,
which was not only the 200th lecture of CCME's ―Xingda lecture series‖ which started
in 1995, but also the 4th of the course ―Academic Ethic and Science and Technology
Paper Composition‖, to near 100 postgraduate freshmen of CCME..
The course of ―Academic ethic and Science and Technology Paper Composition‖ is
set up for the first time, and it is a required course of postgraduates. To
postgraduates in most of the universities in China, the knowledge about academic
ethic and paper writing is from the private contacts with the advisors, but not from the
normal course.
As the teacher of this course, Professor Chen Erqiang said that, this course is a part
of normal postgraduate education in western countries, while it may be neglected in
universities in China. In The University of Akron of the USA, in which he gained his
doctor‘s degree, academic ethic and technology and science paper composition are
two different courses, Professor Chen said.
President Xu Zhihong expressed the same opinion in his speech. He considered
that, when we brought in the science of western, we more consider it as a technology
or a method to prosper our country while have little consideration of its own inherent
value. He said, in the past long time, we have neglected the building of academic
ethic.
Strengthening the building of academic ethic is just the purpose of setting up the
course of ―Academic ethic and Science and Technology Paper Composition‖.
Professor Chen considered that, the embodiment of fruit of science research is
focused on the paper, while the paper can embody the academic ethic and academic
