Stanford <strong>University</strong> to Open First<br />

Asian Branch at <strong>PKU</strong><br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, May 27th, 2004:Stanford <strong>University</strong> is going to open its<br />

first Asian branch at <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> this autumn, according to an agreement it<br />

signed with <strong>PKU</strong> on May 26th. Under the agreement, Stanford will send students to<br />

study at <strong>PKU</strong>, taught together by pr<strong>of</strong>essors from the two universities. This is the first<br />

time Stanford <strong>University</strong> opens its branch in Asian countries.<br />

Stanford's <strong>PKU</strong> branch, to be opened this September, differs from university<br />

branches in China in that it <strong>of</strong>fers overseas study program. The program will proceed<br />

three times a year, each ranging from three to three and a half months with about 40<br />

Stanford students attending. Courses provided for students include economics, law,<br />

Chinese culture and history, and so on. Some <strong>of</strong> the courses will be arranged for<br />

Stanford students to study together with <strong>PKU</strong> students and credits they get at <strong>PKU</strong><br />

would be acknowledged by Stanford <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Recently <strong>PKU</strong> has further strengthened cooperation with Stanford <strong>University</strong> in<br />

teaching and research areas, according to principals from <strong>PKU</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> International<br />

Relations. Since 1994, with the first group <strong>of</strong> students sent to <strong>PKU</strong> by Stanford to<br />

learn the Chinese language, the number <strong>of</strong> Stanford students attending this<br />

exchange program has exceeded 200. In recent years <strong>PKU</strong> has established<br />

cooperative relations with many prestigious universities, including those in the United<br />

States, said Min Weifang, Secretary <strong>of</strong> Party Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> and also a graduate<br />

from Stanford <strong>University</strong>. For instance, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California will send about 40<br />

students to study at <strong>PKU</strong> each year. What‘s more, Harvard <strong>University</strong> and Yale<br />

<strong>University</strong> also have some students studying at <strong>PKU</strong>.<br />

Stanford <strong>University</strong>, founded in 1885, admitted its first student in 1891. Now its<br />

students have amounted to over fourteen thousand, with 25% Asian-born <strong>of</strong> which<br />

more than half are Chinese-born. And the famous Silicon Valley is built on the basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Stanford <strong>University</strong>'s industrial park.<br />
