Stanford University to Open First
Asian Branch at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, May 27th, 2004:Stanford University is going to open its
first Asian branch at Peking University this autumn, according to an agreement it
signed with PKU on May 26th. Under the agreement, Stanford will send students to
study at PKU, taught together by professors from the two universities. This is the first
time Stanford University opens its branch in Asian countries.
Stanford's PKU branch, to be opened this September, differs from university
branches in China in that it offers overseas study program. The program will proceed
three times a year, each ranging from three to three and a half months with about 40
Stanford students attending. Courses provided for students include economics, law,
Chinese culture and history, and so on. Some of the courses will be arranged for
Stanford students to study together with PKU students and credits they get at PKU
would be acknowledged by Stanford University.
Recently PKU has further strengthened cooperation with Stanford University in
teaching and research areas, according to principals from PKU Office of International
Relations. Since 1994, with the first group of students sent to PKU by Stanford to
learn the Chinese language, the number of Stanford students attending this
exchange program has exceeded 200. In recent years PKU has established
cooperative relations with many prestigious universities, including those in the United
States, said Min Weifang, Secretary of Party Committee of PKU and also a graduate
from Stanford University. For instance, University of California will send about 40
students to study at PKU each year. What‘s more, Harvard University and Yale
University also have some students studying at PKU.
Stanford University, founded in 1885, admitted its first student in 1891. Now its
students have amounted to over fourteen thousand, with 25% Asian-born of which
more than half are Chinese-born. And the famous Silicon Valley is built on the basis
of Stanford University's industrial park.
